Is it a Charred Black? i.e. does it look like burnt metal or wood?
Or a greasy black? i.e. does it look slick, oily or wet?
If it is charred you might have a problem.
If it is just greasy then thats residue from roisin in the solder. Or
something close to that.
You should have a wet sponge or towel(I used the cheap brown paper type at
work and a sponge at home.) to rub your tip on. Get a little wire brush to
scrape the black off. Oh yeah, it does cause some problems with heat
transfer.
