I've experimented with a couple of units which I left in the aluminum
housing, except for cutting off the small end to get access to the rotor
plates and their shaft. A simple plastic fitting supports the pager motor,
and reseals the gear train.
Other light weight solutions are possible... large diameter shrink wrap
comes to mind, alluminum foil even.
Lubrication is another issue that would be better served by rewrapping the
finished assembly in a housing.
