You could use the IR transmitter/receiver LED's in a mouse. Put them at
the bottom of the sqwing, and the pendulum breaks the beam, triggering the
counting device.
I don't have the schematics here (They're at home) but I can post them
tonight for you if you want to see how to wire up the IR
transmitter/receiver pair. This only helps if you have a spare mouse that
you don't mind sacrificing to your project.
