Each circle is a neuron. The numbers indicate firing order (as it is a
sequential pattern generator). The lines are the interconnections, and
the little black circles that are where the neuron get's it's inputs.
The plain line is the output of the neuron. Think of the circles as the
arrows. On more advanced neural nets, there are circles and triangles.
The triangles are inhibitory, and the circles are excitatory. This
network only has excitatory inputs, which is why there are only circles,
and no triangles. Periplanetia Computatrix (a computer simulated
cockroach) uses a diagram like this (which can be found on my web page,
though I can't be certain it's perfect).
