I don't know what wattage your soldering iron is, but I use a 15 watt
cheapo $6 iron and I can solder very short wires without the other end
becoming too hot. I can actually hold on to the ends of wires and
resistors with my fingers while I solder without it becoming unbearably
hot... I do all me electronics with the small iron and use a 30 watt
iron for doing mechanics.
works for me, your mileage may vary...
