For the most part, no, they are not useful for walkers. The problem is in
gear-reduction, or the ability to move the legs with enough strength to
make for a useable walking gate. Walkmans only require low-torque to move
the tape across the read-head.

The exception to this rule is the Sony Walkman Professional, which uses
ESCAP 90-degree gearheads for the tape transport mechanism. VERY high
quality, and are the type MarkT. used for his "Walkman" robot.
