Actually, a non-smoking version doesn't need extra parts. You can
do it like this:

I've drawn 74HC schmitt-triggers to provide base current to the
bridge; that's the kind of output you would normally be amplifying,
so I don't count them as extra parts :)

But a darlington comes with a much higher VCEsat, and large voltage
drops in series with the motor are not a good idea at our usually
low supply voltages.
