Get "Stiquito - Advanced Experiments with a Simple and Inexpensive
Robot" by James M. Conrad & Jonathan W. Mills (IEEE Computer
Society, 1998). In it is an article by Mark W. Tilden, titled "The
Future for Nitinol-Propelled Walking Robots." It should give you
some ideas for actuator mechanics, and the rest of the book is no
waste either. Good stuff.
