Knowing a little about the properties of a photodiode helps you
design circuits, but building according to somebody else's plan is
another matter. If you are talking about Dave's Photopopper, the
remedy has to be:

- Check that you're using the right components.
- Check that everything is connected as shown in the schematic,
anodes, kathodes, collectors, emitters, bases, pins 1, 2, 3 and
so on.

And then it works according to specs, unless components are
defective, which is rare. Small solar panels don't have the oomph
to let the smoke out.

Of course building things you don't understand is not satisfactory
in the long run. But electronics is more than simple English, and a
mailing list is not the place to start your study. Neither is the
Web, I think. The signal/noise leaves too much to be desired. So
on to the bookstore you go - or be forever ignorant.
