Try making a photovore using small recorder motors, like found in
micro-cassette devices. Or use servo motors. SunEater_III has
little trouble with my stone floor, and the joints are rather wide,
deep and irregular.

If you prefer sticking to pager motors, cheap plastic clocks can be
used as gearboxes, and allow the use of large wheels - a key to
good terrain performance.
