Thinking about it, I remembered something. Once I was working on (read
trying to fix) an audio equipment (don't remember what it was). This
thing had had a very bad case of dry cell battery leak. The juices from
the dry cell batteries were literally dripping everywhere. When I
started cleaning the mess, I found out that at many places where the
battery juices had gotten onto the PCBs, the solder had become just like
wet powdery mud. Brushing with an old tooth brush removed the solder
cleanly and I was able to resolder those joints. After that I was able
to make the thing work.

So someone needs to do research as to what chemicals are produced when
you let the dry batteries go that leaky - then bottle the chemicals and
sell :-)

The way I remember it. The juices had not attacked component leads, PCB
tracks etc. I however do not know for how long one will have to soak
the boards in those chemicals to have similar effect. May be 2 -3
months. But if the junk boards are just sitting in the junk box, why
not let them soak in something that slowly does the work for us?
