I had the same problem. The guy at the store looked up some tables and
got me PN2907 transistors instead. They work fine in place of 2N3906's
(not that I've ever used any, but the circuits work great, I've never
had a circuit not work, and I've made almost all of the common BEAM
circuits that use a 3906).

I've only had a quick glance at the PN2907 stats, but I think they also
handle considerably more current than the 3906's, possibly more than the
BC*** ones as well. I do however reserve the right to be totally wrong
:-)
Aparently the PN2907 is a reasonably standard transistor too, but that
might just be over here. (ie re-insert standard disclaimer :-)

For the record, the code on the cases of the ones I use is
