I like it. The extra bonus is that in addition to fewer components, I
was able to ditch the 245 and move down to a 14-pin package with only 6
inverters. (I'm planning on trying to make the photovore quite small, so
this is significant :-)

Your body-count is now one transistor, one cap, three resistors, two
diodes, and six IC pins (4 inverters), and as far as my meter can tell,
the circuit performs every bit as well despite these casualties :-)
