By 'spins happily' I assume you mean that the motor spins, and keeps
spinning?

To use a battery to test an SE, you MUST use a series resistor. With
this
series resistor, the SE should make the motor spin, then stop, then
spin, then
stop.

Simply spinning with a battery directly attached does not mean that the
SE
is wired correctly.

You cannot assume the circuit is ok unless you get the run-stop-run
behavior with a battery and a series resistor.
