You are meant to cut up a 9v battery that has 6 AAA-like cells in it,
NOT that has a bunch of rectangular cells stacked up. I always use
Duracell batteries, but other brands are probably constructed in this
fashion too. Looking from the top down on the battery, the cells are
aranged like this:

You remove the metal can at the seam, then remove the cardboard and
contacts on top, then cut off the plastic holding the pack together.
