Subject: 9 volt battery cutting

I've been pulling apart a 9volt battery but i don't quite get it
There are 7 of those little cells, so do i just cut in in two parts. One of
4 and one of 3.
And i'd use the 4 cell part to make the required 5 volts right?
But also what is what - bottom negative, top possitive or the other way
around.
Do i just solder a wire to it or would that be 2 dangerous?
