Hi George.
I just started out building a few robots myself. As a student, I found
that Buying a multimeter and a soldering would probably run at C$200
($125US, give or take). It is really easy to go to a second hand store
and pick up an old record player for $5 or so and maybe some old
walkmans. Solarbotics (http://www.solarbotics.com)
could provide
specialty parts. This is good enough to get started.
